What to Expect
Once on board, we’ll give a short safety briefing and get on our way. Time for the tour starts once we leave the dock.
Typically, we’ll begin setting the lines in the water as we are exiting the outer break wall and officially declare that fishing has started!
We’ll look at the weather, rely on chatter from other captains and make notes of where we were catching fish in the days prior to determine our path for your fishing tour. Based on the length of the trip and time of year we may not be more than a mile or two offshore or we may go 12-15 miles offshore.
80%-90% of what we do will be trolling with artificial lures. On occasion we use dead bait and chunk bait and do a surface jig at the buoys. (When we live bait, the bait is to be caught first thing in the morning).
While on board, you will have access to our Air Conditioned cabin with two couches, a stand up fridge for food and drinks (NO GLASS please), microwave, sink and full stand-up marine head (restroom).
On the back deck, we have a large cooler for sitting on, along with our fighting chair and plenty of deck space to move around.
Up the stairs to the helm, we have a large storage box for seating, with a hardtop canopy for shade.
We’ll provide everything you need to fish: Rods, reels, line, lures, ice, and small tackle equipment when needed.
The main species targeted are the marlin (spear chucker, stripy, blue), Tuna – Ahi (yellowfin, bigeye, skipjack, wavy back), and mahi-mahi and wahoo – ONO.
Policies
General Policies
Sportfishing, like any sport, has some rare but inherent risks of injury from hooks, sinkers, fish spines, etc. We suggest that anglers bring hats, sunglasses, light rain gear, long-sleeve sun shirts, sunscreen and easy-to-remove footwear. Please use your best judgment in deciding what to wear or bring aboard, based on the anticipated weather and sea conditions.
Makai Sportfishing is not responsible for any forgotten, lost or stolen articles, including tackle, phones, clothing, sunglasses or anything else. Make sure you have all your personal belongings before you disembark. Please report any missing items immediately to the boat captain and/or crew.
Cancellation Policy:
We have a 72-hour cancellation policy. You will get a full refund if you cancel your tour at least 72 hours before the scheduled tour.
State Fishing License Required
The State of Hawaii requires all non-residents to have a Recreational Ocean Fishing License, which you may purchase online the morning of your tour for $20.00 per fisherman/woman. It is recommended that you DO NOT purchase these licenses until onboard the vessel as they are non-transferable to other days, in the event of bad weather, lack of people for the trip, or other uncontrollable circumstances. Read the State’s Fact Sheet here.
Catch Policies
We will happily cut any fish weighing up t0 20 lbs at Captain’s discretion, for you to enjoy while on Island, we try our best to share with all passengers and crew. Any fish over 20 lbs will be sent to market; to help cover the cost of tackle, so you aren’t paying for tackle if it was a slow day of fishing. All fish must be cut and removed from the vessel the day of the trip.
**By leaving the dock without fish you are aware you are forfeiting your catch to the boat**
